Hello all...
wondering if anyone can help me understand why
other major search engines (altavista, yahoo, alltheweb, jeeves, msn) list
my site
www.kanabguide.com in the first page of results when searching for <Kanab
Utah>,
but Google doesn't even show it in the first 100?

When I first re-published the site last spring, after a major overhaul, it
jumped up to #16 or so on Google,
but then a few months later, with no changes to the site, it was gone
altogether!?!

Did I do something to make Google mad?
Any help or insight greatly appreciated!

I'm guessing that the other sites have a load more inbound links than
you do. Google likes that more so than the other engines.

That was my first thought, but Yahoo shows 298 backlinks to
kanabguide.com.

I'm certain that Bill is definitely on the right trail, and the answer
is in the links since your site is on the first page of that serp in
Yahoo and MSN.

Quantity of backlinks doesn't seem to be the problem, so my guess would
be insufficient Page Rank - something we can't really view, or
insufficient anchor text in the links pointing to your site or some
combination of the two.

Are the sites that are ahead of yours as relevant to the search terms as
your site?

hello and thanks for your reply:

no... in fact, I just realized Google doesn't even list my site *at all*
under <Kanab, Utah>, out of 800 results! ( but I can search for the url
<kanabguide.com> and find it... )

I am sure I must have over-saturated keywords or something like that,
but have no idea what, how or why.

Another main site, Southern Utah News (www.sunews.net),
is somewhere around number 12 on google for this search -
on the other s.e.'s , Kanabguide is just one or two places below!

This is where I am stuck... what can I do to make Google like this site
again?

Hi Michael

I think your site may be 'sandboxed'

It is my understanding that domains registered after March 2004 can fall
into a 'waiting' pit where google do not consider them relevant until they
have been in operation for at least 8 months.

When was your domain name registered?

There is an interesting way around this. It's worked well for us with our
clients.

Link popularity is one of the main reasons why some site (old & new) rank
higher than others.

Email me on vgr at vhsholdings dot com if you need more help.

Regards
Vance

You are in there. Do a search within results. I think, off the top of
my head, you need to have the phrase "kanab utah" featured more in
your text content.

I looked at a couple of examples of work you have done for your clients.
Can you describe in a little more detail what you mean by "worked well
for us with our clients"? How are you defining success?

Hi all... thanks for the input and the offer of help.

I have had this domain for a few years, but in summer of 04 I did a major
overhaul and transferred the domain to my own (new) hosting company
....would this count as a "new" registration? (I did switch registrars from
NetSol to GoDaddy)

The old site is still up at http://www.kanabguide03.homestead.com - the main
domain used to point here,
this is just the default mask applied by homestead.

The new site is just http://www.kanabguide.com

The old site had a google ranking of about 16 for the phrase "kanab utah"...
but a few months after the rebuild and domain transfer, google dropped it
from the search results altogether!

Fortunately, my other main site, www.sunews.net,
still places relatively high on google,
but I am trying to narrow down what is wrong with the new kanabguide site,
especially since the 05 version starts production in a month or so!

Any help, advice or other comments are extremely welcome.
thanks very much!

hmmm..... it is "in there", but doesn't come up on the first 800 for the
main search!

I know I haven't been "banned", but it still comes down to the basic
question of WHY this site is not in the top 10, or at least the top 20, like
on all the other s.e.'s (well, except the google-based ones!)

What is so different...?

And the fact that it is not even in the top 100 makes me think I am being
"punished" somehow...
I would really like to figure this out to avoid it happening to any other
sites that I create, and also to help me make it back up before next summer
when the advertisers will want to see results!!!

Thanks again for all the time and help...
