What's a big change? If you mean all pages change, but URLs stay the same,
then just tar (zip) the orginal files, and overwrite them.
If you mean URLs change, then 301 redirect them to URLs with similar
content. If you have incoming links with a good PR, there shouldn't be a
problem to switch a site. I have done in the past, and no harm was done.

tar, overwrite, and put it back if it failes. If your URLs stay the same
there shouldn't be a problem, especially with a few incoming links with
good PR (= googlebot updates fast).
