I heard somewhere that you can use them for SEO ... and then later
read the opposite.
I just wanted to know from the real experts, what is correct.

Realize that a lot you will read "somewhere" will be stuff that is 1]
out-dated, worked once but not now - due to abuse or whatever, yet
some people may still pass it along and 2] sounds good but when you
think about it a few times you go "now really ... " and toss it into
the 86 file.

Have the grain of salt in hand when reading about SEO.

Comments are ignored by the major search engines so they have no role
in SEO.

Use them for what they are designed for, leaving yourself or others
working on the site comments.
